Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck

Tummy Tuck or abdominoplasty is one of the most popular procedures we perform. Exciting and dramatic reshaping of the torso is possible through this surgery – a tummy tuck can help achieve that thin and tight tummy you’ve always wanted or that you had when you were younger.

The ideal contour is achieved through tightening or “plicating” the abdominal muscles and removing excess abdominal skin. Our Plastic Surgeon Dr. Nicholas Flugstad enjoys performing a variety of tummy tuck techniques, including complete tummy tucks, as well as mini tummy tucks, with or without liposuction.

Are you a candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

If you have excess fat and skin in the midsection of your body that hasn’t responded to diet and exercise, you might be a good candidate for a tummy tuck. While it isn’t a weight loss technique, abdominoplasty can eliminate stubborn fat directly in those problem areas and make you significantly slimmer, flattening the tummy and slimming the waistline. Liposuction is often used in conjunction with a tummy tuck to remove excess fat.

Only a consultation and examination in our office can determine if a tummy tuck is recommended for you and if it will deliver the results you want. In your consultation, we will perform a thorough examination and determine how to best treat your individual areas of concern.

What happens during Abdominoplasty?

A full tummy tuck is usually performed with the patient under general anesthesia. The incision is made below the bikini line and extends to the hip bones so that the maximum skin can be removed. In some cases where there is a considerable amount of tissue to be removed, a vertical incision in the center of the abdomen may also be necessary. This is called a “fleur de lis” tummy tuck.

The abdominal muscles are tightened, liposuction is performed to remove excess fat, and the loose skin is removed. The navel is then repositioned to its new central placement, and the incision is sutured closed. Liposuction of other areas such as the lower back/hips can be done simultaneously to further enhance your result.

A mini-tummy tuck can be performed on those who have less extra skin to be removed. In this case, the incision is shorter, and the navel may not need to be repositioned. Liposuction may still be performed, and the abdominal muscles may be tightened, if necessary.

What is involved in Tummy Tuck recovery?

Tummy tuck surgery requires about two weeks off from work for recovery. A mini-tummy tuck may require only about a week. Due to the need for muscle tightening, there is no shortcut for recovering from a tummy tuck. More recently, however, a single-use, long-acting injectable pain medication (Exparel) has come to market that is used to help numb the area for the first 24-48 hours.

A drain is usually inserted in the incisions at the end of surgery to capture blood and fluid. We will give you full instructions for caring for the drain, and it will be removed in one of your post-operative examinations. A binder garment is also worn around the area for four weeks to promote healing and reduce swelling.

While some pain, swelling, and bruising are to be expected, we do everything we can to enhance your recovery. Sometimes, a combination of muscle relaxer and pain medication is most helpful. We will closely monitor your progress and let you know when it is safe to return to your normal activities.

We always place the incision very low so that the scar is concealed by clothing or bathing suits. You will be enjoying a flat tummy and more defined waist before you know it!
