Facial aging has a number of components, and one of the first signs people notice is a change in the quality of their skin. This includes subtle differences in skin texture and larger pore size. Skin doesn’t feel as elastic and soft as it used to. Fine wrinkles begin to appear.
Good practices for prevention include appropriate skin care, limiting sun exposure, and wearing a UV blocking sunscreen. But even with the best skin care is practiced, many of us become unsatisfied with the quality or appearance of our skin over time.
One interesting discovery of modern medicine is that controlled “injury” of the surface of the skin leads to regeneration and rejuvenation of the upper layers of skin. This has proven to be true with many modalities of skin resurfacing, including laser, dermabrasion, and chemical peels.
What are Chemical Peels?
Chemical Peels are a class of facial rejuvenation treatments that are time-tested, reliable and safe in almost any application. The process itself involves precise application of a solution (usually a weak acid) to the face, and allowing that solution to work evenly on the treated area. After the peel, there is typically a healing period that ranges from 1–14 days, depending on the depth of the peel.
Lighter peels are excellent for clarifying and brightening skin, and can be helpful for treating hyperpigmentation such as melasma. The VI peel and peels by SkinMedica are very effective light peels that have given our patients good results. These have a relatively short recovery time.
30% TCA Peel
The 30% TCA peel is a medium strength peel, with a recovery time of about 7 days. It reliably provides a reduction in fine lines, wrinkles, and improved skin texture.
Croton Oil + Phenol Peel
The Croton Oil + Phenol peel is another well-studied and time-tested treatment, originated by Hetter. This is a strong peel that reaches the deeper layers of the skin. It takes longer to heal (10—14 days), and there is usually some swelling, but the result is a remarkable amount of wrinkle reduction. Even the deeper wrinkles around the mouth are improved. Some patients notice a small amount of decreased pigment of their skin, but this is uncommon.
Chemical peels are fantastic, long-lasting skin treatments that rejuvenate your facial complexion.
