Dysport is a similar product to Botox®. It has the same mechanism of action, that is, blocking the movement of the facial muscles where it is injected. Dysport is measured slightly differently than Botox®, and for some patients it may be more effective, particularly if they don’t respond to Botox®.
Like Botox®, Dysport contains dilute amounts of a botulinum toxin (abobotulinumtoxinA), and relaxes specific muscles so that they can no longer contract and cause the skin to wrinkle. The most common areas treated are between the eyebrows (glabella), forehead lines, and crows’ feet. Treatment with Dysport is not very long lasting, but lasts from 3 months to 6 months. Treating areas where wrinkles tend to form due to overactive muscles may actually prevent or slow the formation of those wrinkles.
