Liposuction is a surgical procedure that improves your body’s contour through the removal of excess fat*. Dr. Flugstad has extensive experience with a wide variety of liposuction techniques. He also completed a one-year fellowship with Dr. Joseph Hunstad, who developed the tumescent technique currently used by most liposuction surgeons.
We perform targeted and thorough fat removal in the areas you are concerned about to give you a dramatic result. It is done using a multiple-step process that ensures a smooth and even contour. This requires patience on the part of the surgeon, as extra time might be required to achieve the smooth look that you want.
The areas we treat include the abdomen, hips, back, arms and armpit area, thighs, calves, and the neck area. Liposuction can enhance your figure by slimming the abdomen, thighs, and arms, reducing excess underarm fat to improve breast appearance, take care of such issues as “saddlebags” or “love handles”, and create better body proportion*.
Are you a candidate for Liposuction?
If you are unhappy with your shape or size, or if you have tried diet and exercise but still have fat deposits that you would like to remove, you might be a good candidate for liposuction. While it isn’t a weight loss technique, it can reduce stubborn fat in those problem areas and make you significantly slimmer, in some cases reducing your waist by several sizes.
Liposuction is often used in conjunction with body contouring surgical procedures, such as tummy tuck, breast reduction, thigh lift, arm lift, body lift, and skin removal surgeries after massive weight loss. We do caution patients that if they have overhanging skin from weight loss, they may need skin removal rather than liposuction alone to achieve excellent contour.
Only a consultation and examination in our office can determine if liposuction is recommended for you and if it will deliver the results you want. In your liposuction consultation, we will perform a thorough examination and determine how to best treat your individual areas of concern.

What happens during Liposuction?
A small incision is made in the area to be treated, and a hollow tube called a cannula is inserted. The surgeon then moves the cannula back and forth in order to suction out the excess fat tissue. When the power-assisted liposuction device is used to move the cannula back and forth, the fat cells are broken up more efficiently. Our multiple-step approach allows us to use cannulas that vary in size and type, which provides you with the smoothest possible outcome. We strive to place the incisions in areas where the small scars won’t be easily seen.
If we are performing liposuction on a small area, we commonly use a syringe technique, which allows for precise and localized fat removal that is more controlled and less invasive than the traditional method. A syringe is connected to the liposuction cannula, and the surgeon is able to create suction by hand, which allows more control and finesse to refine certain areas.
In most liposuction cases, general anesthesia is recommended, but in smaller cases, local anesthesia can be used. The tumescent technique, which is the gold standard for liposuction, infiltrates local anesthesia and epinephrine in the treatment areas, which allows some liposuction to be done without sedation. Tumescent solution also significantly reduces blood loss and bruising, making recovery faster and easier.
During your liposuction consultation, we will advise you of our proposed surgical plan, and we will tell you everything to expect before, during, and after your surgery.

What is involved in Liposuction recovery?
After liposuction, most patients are fitted with a compression garment over the treated areas. This garment helps to prevent swelling and can, therefore, speed your healing process. Depending upon the extent of your liposuction, you may have to wear it for just a few days or perhaps a few weeks.
Most patients take at least a week off from work after surgical liposuction. If large areas were treated, however, you might need up to two weeks before returning to work. Exercise can be gradually increased starting at 2-3 weeks. We follow your recovery progress closely, and we strive to get you back to your routine as soon as possible.
Soreness, bruising, and swelling are common after liposuction. The tumescent technique helps to keep this to a minimum, as does following our after-care instructions. Ice packs may be helpful, and we will provide you with a prescription for pain medication to use if you need it.
Typically, there are no sutures to remove. Any scars will be small and discreet, and they will fade and become smooth within a few months.
The result of liposuction will be a smoother, shapelier body contour, increased confidence, and maybe even smaller sized clothing in your closet.
