Are You a Candidate for a Facelift?
If you are experiencing sagging skin, jowls, and deep wrinkles and creases, you may be a candidate for a facelift. We will also need to review your health history to make sure you are healthy enough for surgery. Everyone, women and men alike, deserves to feel confident about the way they look. A facelift, also known as a rhytidectomy, can help you achieve this result by reversing the visible signs of aging. It can tighten sagging facial muscles and skin as well as remove excess fat to bring back the more youthful appearance you remember seeing in the mirror. Frequently, depending on the goals of your surgery, eyelid surgery or a browlift is done at the same time as a facelift to further soften wrinkles in the upper portion of the face.
What Happens During a Facelift?
Your facelift surgical plan will be customized based on your goals and areas you wish to improve. During surgery, your surgeon will tighten the facial muscles, remove excess skin and fat, and re-drape the skin over the newly taut muscle tissue. This leads to dramatic improvement in wrinkles and jowls, and a smoothly defined jawline. We always minimize incisions and will place them in hidden locations such as the hairline and natural creases of your skin.
Besides a full face lift, we offer the popular MACS Lift procedure. MACS stands for minimal access cranial suspension. This shorter procedure has a typical recovery of one week or less. We will work with you to determine the best procedure for your desired outcome.
When patients also want to improve additional areas, such as an aging neck with loose skin and banding of the muscle, our surgeons perform neck lift with muscle tightening at the same time. In fact, many patients seeking a face lift also have concerns with their neck, brow, eyelids, and other areas that can be corrected at the same time. Depending on your desires, we also offer facial skin resurfacing, facial fat grafting (or fat transfer) at the same time as face lifting.
What is Involved in Facelift Recovery?
Depending on the type of facelift procedure you choose, the recovery time will vary from 1-2 weeks. Your head will typically be wrapped in soft gauze after surgery, and you will need to keep it elevated for the first few days. Bruising and swelling will fade over 2-3 weeks and can be camouflaged with makeup. You may experience temporary numbness of the skin, but this usually resolves over time. Discomfort and pain are usually minimal, and can be controlled with medication.
The final results of your facelift won’t be apparent for a few weeks. The puffiness you see in the mirror will gradually resolve as your new look emerges. You will look natural—like yourself, just younger and fresher—and will feel more self-confident. Friends will comment that you look refreshed, that you lost weight, or changed your hair. It’s up to you if you want to tell them your secret. We like to think that our best work goes unnoticed!
